About Rock Creek Velo

Rock Creek Velo is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to advancing amateur athletic competition in the sport of bicycle racing in all its forms and to provide opportunities for RCV members to compete at local, regional, national and international events.  We do this by:

  • Providing coaching and instruction to RCV members
  • Encouraging participation of RCV members in competitive cycling events; and
  • Promoting the development of juniors in bicycle racing.

Training

RCV is a year-round team.  In the spring, we train for road racing, criteriums, and time trials.  To accommodate riders across the area, training rides are typically held in Rock Creek Park, Hains Point, Bethesda, and Gaithersburg, with endurance rides spanning the region.  In late August, we transition to cyclocross, training in parks in Bethesda/Chevy Chase and Gaithersburg.  In November, we move indoors for spin classes, core exercises, plyometrics, and weight training.  Sessions are held at Sport & Health locations in Bethesda and Rockville.

Competition

RCV riders, family, and friends come out in force at races. During race season, events are held on weekends throughout the region, typically within 60 miles of DC. While riders typically do not race every weekend, there are generally ample opportunities to gain racing experience. In addition, on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer, there is a series of road races held in Greenbelt in which many of the club members participate.

Coaches

RCV is fortunate to have a group of outstanding, dedicated volunteer coaches.  Each brings a unique skillset to help develop our juniors’ fitness, confidence, camaraderie, and achievement.  From our youngest riders learning how to clip in to their pedals to our older riders learning race strategy and tactics and analyzing their power files, RCV coaches are committed to creating a healthy and safe atmosphere of sportsmanship, dignity, teamwork, and success.

Parents and Families

RCV riders are successful because of the strong support-network of RCV families who participate both on and off bikes.  Parents are actively engaged chaperoning rides and volunteering at events and races.  Some even compete themselves.  We also host social events throughout the year, including at road and cyclocross national championships.

Board of Directors

RCV is governed by a board of volunteer members with input from coaches, juniors, and families.
